British Social Realism vs. Hollywood

British Social Realism

  • British Social Realism are filmed on actual, real life locations such as parks, council estates and family homes. This makes the film seem more believable for audiences.
  • Use non-professional or unknown actors as it adds to the realistic look.
  • BSR films deal with a lot of everyday issues in today’s society such as unemployment and teen pregnancy.
  • Camera quality is quite grainy as the budget is low.
  • British social realism films have a low budget so can only be advertised over things such as posters and social media.

Examples of British Social Realism films:

Hollywood
  • Hollywood films use sets, set up in studios using high tech equipment.
  • Hollywood actors are well known actors that star in many other well-known films.
  • Hollywood films are usually fictional based and they use a lot of SFX and high tech equipment.
  • Hollywood films are in high quality as they have a very high budget to produce the film.
  • Hollywood films make twice as much money in the box office than British films as they have a premier and are advertised globally.

Hollywood films are some of the most popular films in the world. To some, having their name inscribed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame would be a dream come true and to others just to get their picture taken with the sign is a life accomplishment.

There are certain characteristics that accompany films that leave Hollywood such as, well-known actors, big budget films and huge cinema releases. Most importantly, Hollywood films take on an ‘escapist’ tone in which a protagonist is able to avoid a dull life and enter a whole new world. Hollywood films are often glamorised and perfected and an inconsiderable amount of them are fictional, an example of a Hollywood film is ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.

On the other hand, British Social Realism films are the complete opposite of Hollywood films. Some obvious traits of these films are low budgets and involve unknown actors and actresses. Protagonists of these films are usually faced with real-life, emotional truths of their reality and isn’t given a chance to escape representing real life. British films are often grainy to add to the realistic look. An example of British Social Realism is the film ‘This is England’.
