Bloopers AFTETASTE

Evaluation- Question 3

One of the scenes that was filmed poorly was the counselling scene. Although this scene was crucial in finding out the truth between Amber and Blake's relationship we found when watching back the film that the voiceovers seemed louder than the councillors voice. Although the voiceovers are outlining the truth, we then felt that having a quiet voice portrays the hurt that Amber is feeling and the negative feelings that Blake makes her feel.

Audience feedback pays an important role on the making of the film, this is because within the media industry it is the audience who bring in the revenue. Filmmakers must ensure their film is to the best possible quality for it to be successful as it is individuals reviews that usually spread the word of a good newly released film. Short films are usually made to inform an audience about a topic or made as a hobby. There are many ways to collect audience feedback whether this being through social media, screen tests, questionnaires and reaching out directly to chosen target audiences. On creation of AFTERTASTE, my group decided to promote our film across social media and made them watch the film and recorded their opinions.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Q3

Showing various individuals from our target audience our finished film we received many positive comments on our point of view shot of Blake picking up the smashed picture frame and the dinner scene where all characters are sat round the table. The reason for this is because individuals said they enjoyed the different camera shots and the use of sound effects and dialogue suggested that the importance of domestic abuse was really clear and a lot more powerful than originally intended.

100%

Agreed the film style is British Social Realism.

90%

Rated the film 10/10, the other 10% rated it a 9/10.

100%

Agreed they are more aware of the importance of domestic abuse.

70%

Rated the film 5/5 for effecting their emotion.

Upon collecting audience feedback, we also gathered feedback about the name of the film and how AFTERTASTE works well. The reason the film is called this is to show the aftermath of domestic abuse and the effect it causes on individuals leaving a 'bitter', traumatising effect on women and men such as Amber during the film. Our target audience agreed with the title and the meaning behind it and think it fit well with the theme of the film. Although the majority of feedback was positive, there was a few comments on how the theme wasn't very clear at the start of the film so the title didn't fit in too well.

We found that out of the 10 individuals we found from our target audience, all these individuals felt that domestic abuse isn't a controversial topic and they didn't have much of an understanding on the effect of it on individuals. Due to this opinion, it was important we ensured our short film gave individuals an understanding on the topic which seemed a success when collecting audience feedback. Looking at the tweets/comments on this chart shows the positive feedback we received regarding the short film.

T1: Double click to edit

In terms of our demographics, our film was very popular with the older generation rather than those of an age where they are with their partners in serious relationships wanting to move out for the first time like Amber and Blake in AFTERTASTE. These individuals found the counselling scene the most effective as it was the big reveal on the feelings of both characters and how Blake's past is the reason he acts the way he does. This was a success for my group and I as we wanted the message of our film to show how individuals upbringings can be a reason for domestic abuse in the future.

The main piece of criticism we received is the film was too short. The reason this was criticism is because they weren't fully satisfied with the ending of the film and wanted to find out more about the characters personalities and the reasons behind the film. Although the film had a clear storyline, audiences had different theories and opinions on what next is to happen for the couple and although audiences want answers, this can also be beneficial as it will allow them to extra think the film. Although this is criticism it helped boost my groups confidence as they were intrigued to find out more about the film meaning we had done a good job.

I learnt from the feedback that we had similar conventions to popular short film 'Thirty-Three' which has a similar storyline to AFTERTASTE. This is effective as although AFTERTASTE has its own twist on the storyline with Blake's family being the reason for the troubles but the fact that Thirty-Three was recognised from AFTERTASTE means the film was successfully formed and put together.

Evaluation- Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Evaluation- Question 4

ADOBE PREMIER PRO

Adobe Premier Pro was the main software used in order to edit our short film. This software enabled us to import our rushes and organise them into a timeline in order to organise scenes based on our script.
This software was also very helpful as it enabled me to use basic editing functions such as cropping and video functions to ensure our short film was edited to the best of my ability.
One feature of Adobe Premier Pro that stood out to me was 'audio gain'. This feature allowed me to measure the output of audio in each clip to enable their to be a clear balance between sound effects and dialogues from the characters. The use of overlapping sounds in the bathroom scene of AFTERTASTE received a lot of positive feedback as they were clear on Amber's feelings and the effect domestic abuse has on individuals.

SCRIBD

2

24

Scribd was another website I used to enable me to turn my PowerPoint presentations and Word documents into more presentable and accessible blog entries as blogger doesn't allow uploads of PowerPoint to be uploaded. For example, when researching into short film case studies such as Cubs and Cherries I used Scribd to embed my presentation to upload to my blog.

YOUTUBE

3

24

YouTube was another platform I used to upload extra videos such as bloopers and then upload the final take of AFTERTASTE to add to my blog. This was an effective platform to use when uploading my short film because videos can easily be accessed and edited on YouTube and people can search for AFTERTASTE internationally making it the easiest medium to view videos online.
Another way I used YouTube in the making of our short film was watching tutorial videos for Adobe Premier Pro. For example, when adding music to our short film I needed to find a tutorial which enabled me to fade it out before characters dialogue otherwise audiences will have struggled to hear crucial parts of dialogue.

PIKTOCHART

4

24

Piktochart is a new online software I discovered when finding creative ways to express my film ideas on my blog. This software is free of charge and has many creative and interesting templates that can be edited multiple times for different projects. I used this software on creation of my evaluation questions as I felt it is a way to express my ideas professionally while applying my own creative ideas making a change to using Microsoft PowerPoint.

IMOVIE

5

24

iMovie is another software/application I used in the completion of my short film.
Although AFTERTASTE was edited on Adobe Premier Pro, iMovie allowed me to create the ending clip of the film to have the name AFTERTASTE fade out to black to show audiences the end of film. The reason why I used iMovie for this is because this software was installed to my mobile and I already had an idea of how to use it so YouTube tutorials were not needed.
I also made the 'Behind the Scenes' video on iMovie as the videos were already on my mobile making it easier to create as they will not have to be transferred onto a desktop computer. This software also allowed me to add music easily from my phone.

BLOGGER

6

24

Blogger is a website I have been using whilst studying AS/A2 media to upload my coursework assignments.
However, this year I feel my blog has improved to my AS blog as it is more eye-catching and easier to navigate to different research and projects I have been working on throughout A2 Media. I added a pages gadget to the right hand side so when people visit my blog they can click on the desired page depending on what they want to see making it more organised and aesthetically pleasing to audiences.

SOCIAL MEDIA

7

24

Social Media platforms are the the easiest ways to interact and get messages across to individuals internationally usually free of charge. The target audience for my short film are teenagers and parents of teenagers so creating social media platforms for Beyond Pictures allowed me to promote AFTERTASTE and gain constructive criticism and positive feedback in the comment sections.

INTERNET

8

24

The internet is another platform I used to research and find out about British Social Realism, narrative theorists as well as various short films already created. I also used the internet to find sound effects, music and found inspiration for different elements of my short film.
During the editing stage I used the internet to find tutorials on YouTube to get a better understanding of Adobe Premier Pro and during the evaluation stage I used the internet to find creative ways to answer the question.

INDESIGN

9

InDesign was one of the main technologies used during AS to create my magazine feature article. For A2 I created a feature article based on my short film AFTERTASTE so the skills I learnt last year came in handy. For example, the use of columns, pull quotes and colour palettes allowed me to creatively put together double page spread based on AFTERTASTE. One feature that is effective on InDesign is the square tool as it allowed me to place different squares in areas I wanted text and images in order to plan and prepare my feature article before adding in the final text and images.

EQUIPMENT

10

24

When filming and recording voice overs we used a variety of different equipment to ensure my short film is as high quality as possible. We used a CANON EOS 700D to record and a SLIK 18000 tripod to balance the camera in order to keep the camera steady when filming different sequences. We also attached a RODE microphone to enhance the audio of the film and then used the SD card to import all the files onto a desktop computer so none got lost in the editing of our film.

Social Media Promotions

This is a various different types of social media platforms that we used in order to promote our production company and upcoming short film, AFTERTASTE.
The website will be  used for audiences to be able to research and look into more depth about our film and what our aims as a production company is to do. Our company aims is clearly stated in a short paragraph on the website telling audiences the reasoning behind the creation of Beyond Pictures and the main components.
The social media profiles on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are used to update audiences about new projects Beyond Pictures are working on but also giving them the latest news about current and future ideas. The reason why social media is a powerful way to attract audiences is because almost everyone in today's society has a social media account which enables us to attract potential viewers to our short films with no costs. Using no cost advertising like this enables larger audiences to read up about the film without having to spend any money.

Ancillary Task 1: Film Poster

Film Poster: Draft 2

This is the second draft for our film poster. Similar to most film posters it contains the film title; tag line; main actors of the film; release date; production company logo and directors information.
The effect makes Amber on the left look like she is hidden within the shadows to represent the seriousness of domestic abuse. Although Blake's side has more colour to show he is in power there is still tones of black and white in his image to show the negative side of him and why he acts the way he does within the film.

The title is written in capitals and in a white colour to connote safety which the main protagonists need within the short film and the capital letters represent the seriousness of the topic. The text on the poster also is highlighted against the dark background which highlights that although people may act find and hide in the shadows, the importance of what they are going through is serious.
The poster also has a tagline included, which means a bit about the film is given away not just the image itself giving clues on the film.

Film Poster: Draft 1

This is the first draft for our film poster. Similar to most film posters it contains the film title; tag line; main actors of the film; release date; production company logo and directors information.
The effect makes both the main protagonists look animated/painted. The female (Amber) is made this way as she is being controlled like a character in a game. Whereas the male character (Blake) is made this way as it turns out his past is what has formed and making him act the way he does.
The title is written in capitals and in red colour to connote danger which is caused within the short film and the capital letters represent the seriousness of the topic.
The poster also has a tagline included, which means a bit about the film is given away not just the image itself giving clues on the film.
